The Indian cricket team has had a lot of prestigious captains in the history of the team. These captains have led the national team to many different international accolades and accomplishments.

Way back in 1926, India became a full member of the Imperial Cricket Conference, which is known today as the International Cricket Council. A few years later, in 1932, it became the sixth Test nation, joining New Zealand, West Indies, South Africa, Australia and England.

In that time, there have been 36 different Test match captains, 26 One Day International captains and nine Twent20 International captains of the Indian cricket team. Let’s take a closer look at some of the more recent and well-known captains of the Indian cricket team.

Many Recent Captains

The Indian cricket team has had many impressive captains over the years. With so many years playing as an organized team on the international level, there have been many chances for captains to lead the team to glory. And that has happened on many occasions.

Below, we break down some of the most recent captains of the Indian cricket team in different formats. Some of these players rank among the greatest leaders of all-time for the Indian cricket team, and some rank near the top of the most impressive for what they do both on and off the pitch.

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli is one of the most successful captains of the Indian cricket team history. He has the most wins in Test matches as captain, with 40. He served as captain for Test matches for the Indian cricket team intermittently from 2014 through 2022.

In 68 total matches, the team had 40 wins behind his lead, with a win percentage of 58.82%.

Cricket

Kohli also served as the captain of the Indian cricket team for ODI competitions from 2013 through 2021. He captained the squad for 95 total games, earning 65 wins in that time for a win percentage of 68.42%.

He was also captain of the Indian T20I team from 2017 through 2021. In that time, he captained 50 matches, earning 30 wins for a win percentage of 60%. In addition to just being a great leader on the field, he is widely regarded as one of the best batsmen in the history of the Indian cricket team.

KL Rahul

KL Rahul served as captain of the Indian cricket team for one Test match against South Africa in the 2021-2022 season. Unfortunately, the Indian team lost that match. He also took over as captain of the Indian cricket team for ODI matches starting in 2022. He has captained three matches thus far, and the Indian team wasn’t successful in any of them.

KL Rahul accomplished some impressive things earlier on in his playing career. He was the first cricketer in Indian history to score a century in his debut for the men’s One Day International team. He’s also only the third Indian cricketer in history to score a century in all three of the international cricket formats.

Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma has served as captain of the Indian cricket team for two matches thus far in 2022, with the team winning both of them. He took over as the captain for the ODI squad in 2017 and continues to serve in that role today.

In 16 ODI matches as the captain of the Indian cricket team, Sharma has helped lead the team to 13 wins, for a winning percentage of 81.25%. He’s served in the same captaincy role for the T20I team from 2017 until now. He’s captained the team for 35 matches in that timeframe, with the Indian cricket team winning 29 of them, for a winning percentage of 82.25%.

On the field, he’s the opening batsman for the team and occasionally serves as the right-arm off break bowler. He holds the world record for the highest individual store in ODI history, with a 264. He’s also the only player to score three double-centuries in ODIs.

For all his accomplishments, he was awarded the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year award back in 2019, due in large part to the five centuries he scored during the 2019 World Cup.

Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant has captained the Indian cricket team for T20I matches five times in 2022. The team won two of them, lost two and had one with no result, for an even 50% winning percentage.

He’s a middle order wicket-keeper batter, and has served as the captain for the Indian Premier League club Delhi Capitals.

He’s only 24 years old, so there’s still plenty of time for Pant to climb up the ladder and get a lot more experience on the field and as a captain of different squads. Three years ago, Pant was named the ICC’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year. So, there are obviously bright times ahead for Pant.

Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya has served as the captain of the Indian cricket team for three matches in T20I in 2022. The team won all three of those matches, for a perfect 100% winning percentage in that time. On the domestic level, Pandya serves as captain for the Gujarat Titans of the Indian Premier League. In 2022, he led the team to the IPL title.

He’s considered a great all-rounder. He bats from the right side and also bowls from the right side as a fast-medium bowler. He comes from a cricketer family as well, as his brother, Krunal Pandya, plays international cricket for the Indian team as well.

Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah has served as captain for just one Indian cricket team match. It came in 2022 against England in a Test match — one that the Indian cricket team did not win.

While his experience as a captain of the team isn’t very vast, he does have many accomplishments and is very skilled. Bumrah is actually the first Asian bowler to take five wickets in Test innings in Australia, England and South Africa in the same calendar year.

He also holds a record for the most runs scored in a single over in a Test match. That came when he scored 35 in July of 2022. In 2016, he became the bowler who claimed the most wickets in T20Is in one calendar year. His 28 surpassed the previous record that was held by Dirk Nannes.

Bumrah is generally considered to have an unorthodox action. He has a short run-up that starts with small, stuttering strides. He has a high pace action that is stiff-armed. And he has an unusual release point, which makes it very challenging for other batsmen to pick up on his bowling.

Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan served as the captain of the Indian cricket team for six ODI matches in 2021-2022. In those matches, the Indian team won five of them with only one loss, for an 83.33 winning percentage.

He also served as captain of the Indian cricket team for three T20I matches in 2021. The Indian team won one of those and lost two, for a winning percentage of 33.33%.

He’s a left-handed opening batsman and he’s occasionally used as a right-arm off break bowler. In the Indian Premier League, he plays for the Punjab Kings, as well as Delhi in first-class cricket. He has ended as the leading run-scorer for the Indian cricket team in many competitions, including the 2013 Champions Trophy, the 2015 World Cup and the 2017 Champions Trophy.

He even became the first player in IPL history to score two back-to-back centuries. In March of 2013, he scored the fastest century by any batsman during his debut on the Test circuit, ending all his innings with 187 runs on 174 balls. He is an extremely impressive player, even if he hasn’t captained many matches for the Indian cricket team.
